about

An oasis in the Oregon High Desert, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for many native and migratory birds. It serves as a key part of the Pacific Flyover, the yearly journey that birds take when migrating up and down the Pacific coast of North America.

Recorded during the tail end of the Pacific Flyover, we were able to capture a mix of the native and migratory birds as they sung their songs during the Dusk and Dawn choruses. These field recordings were taken during a time of environmental unease. Severe drought has plagued the high desert for years; a lack of snow melt which feeds the waterways has turned the primary lake of Malheur Refuge into a collection of puddles. Without water to feed the ecosystem, the foundational insects and rodents of the food chain are unable to flourish, affecting the food supply of the birds. Great Horned Owls were found in a tree, unwilling to fly or leave their nest; we later learned they were in mourning from their young dying to malnutrition. Desperate for food, a large Raven which had taken over a watch tower had stolen many birds’ eggs and pecked them through to eat the yolks, killing the future offspring of other birds in the area. While talking to a bird guide when scouting the area for recording spots, the guide told us the bird populations were a small fraction of what they were only a few years before. Many of the marshland birds that would flock to Malheur for safety had not even stopped at the Wildlife Refuge that year, due to the lack of food and water.

These recordings are able to capture the joy and magic that bird song brings to an area. You will hear songs of joy, triumph, and humor. But they are made while in a state of survival, not a state of bounty. Bird ecosystems are on a decline, year after year, and we encourage you to do all you can to support bird life and ecosystems in your area.
